A handful of lucky Toronto drivers got to fill up for free Thursday after a technical malfunction with the pumps at a Shell gas station.

The price of gas at the Shell station at Woodbine Avenue and Highway 7 was meant to be 10 cents per litre as part of a promotion for the company’s new high-performance fuel. With the average price of gas in Toronto over $1.10 per litre, the promotion was a well-timed break for most customers.

“Half of your budget goes out to fuel in Ontario right now as a small business owner and it’s ridiculous,” said Bryan Hinckson who uses a van to operate his locksmithing business.

But the deal got even better when a technical glitch caused the advertised price for gas to drop to a single cent.

The total cost for most fill-ups was so low that the gas station decided to just give it away.

Jag Narain said he came to the station to take advantage of the promotion.

“My smile became more evident when I saw that it was free,” he said.

The 10-cent promotion was offered at two Shell stations in the Greater Toronto Area. Both were only open for an hour before police had to start turning cars away.
