The Toronto Catholic District School Board has confirmed that it was a replica BB gun and not a real weapon that was found in the locker of a high school student.
Officers were called to James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic Secondary School, in the area of Finch Avenue and Keele Street, shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Police initially reported that a teen had been seen carrying what appeared to be a firearm inside the school and that a principal and three teachers at the school tackled the teen, and restrained him while they waited for police.
Const. Victor Kwong said the 16-year-old boy was taken into police custody when officers arrived.
However, police later corrected the statement to say that the BB gun was in the teen’s locker. At no point was the student carrying the toy weapon with him.
The teen was also never tackled by school staff.
In an email statement, the TCDSB said the “agitated” student was in the principal’s office while staff phoned 911 for paramedics.
“There was no danger to our students or staff at any time,” the statement said.
The student was released from the school, accompanied by his mother.
No one was injured.
