A week after police said they were going through high quality surveillance video of a murder scene, investigators named a suspect in connection with the shooting death of 27-year-old Julian Weekes.

Police released the suspect’s identity during a news conference Monday morning.

Weekes had just left a memorial for a friend who had been shot weeks earlier when he was attacked.

Det.-Sgt. Mike Patterson told reporters Monday that Weekes was shot just as he left Annie’s Bar and Grill where friends had gathered to remember Ceyon Carrington, a 29-year-old man who was shot to death near Queen Street East and Carlaw Avenue on March 23.

Weekes was shot outside of a restaurant located just next door to where that memorial was taking place on April 2, Patterson said, but there is no evidence someone from inside the party set him up.

“Mr. Weekes was very comfortable with the people he was with and in the area – he didn’t seem to be alarmed at all,” he said.

Witnesses told investigators that the injured man continued to stagger down the street, attempting to flag down passing cars. No one stopped to help him.

He fell over once he reached the parking lot of a gas station at Parliament and Richmond streets. Police found him lying in a pool of blood, clinging to life.

He died at the scene a short time later.

At the time, witnesses told police Weekes was shot by a man who had an athletic build and who ran from the scene toward Power Street, south from the shooting scene.

“We’ve had a lot of success in retrieving video from the area and it is of very high quality,” Det.-Sgt Mike Patterson told reporters the day after Weekes was shot. “I’m confident in the next few days we’ll be able to have some high quality images of the event.”

At the news conference Monday, Patterson confirmed the surveillance images helped the investigation but said investigators still need to hear from witnesses. Patterson said the murders have struck the community hard.

“We also know that there are eyewitnesses to this murder who have yet to come forward to police. I’m encouraging you at this time to come forward and talk to us,” he said.

So far, police have no evidence to suggest the murder of Weekes and Carrington are connected.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a 29-year-old suspect named Michael Teddy Gibson. The man is now wanted for first degree murder in connection with the case.

Patterson urged the suspect to “do the right thing” and contact a lawyer.

Anyone who spots the suspect should call police immediately. He may be armed and should be considered dangerous, police said.
