Police have identified a man who was shot and killed in Leslieville last week.

The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23.

Police were called to the area of Queen Street East and Carlaw Avenue for a reported shooting. When officers arrived on scene, they found a man, later identified as 29-year-old Ceyon Carrington, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Carrington was an aspiring rapper from Regent Park who performed under the name C-Sick.

According to police, he had spent that night playing basketball at the Regent Park Community Centre, where he was known to mentor kids in the community, before taking a cab to the area of the shooting.

Det. Andy Singh told reporters that Carrington had scheduled a session at a recording studio. As Carrington and his friend stepped out of the cab and walked toward the studio, a gunman approached from a nearby vehicle and shot Carrginton several times from behind.

The gunman was "within arm's reach" of Carrington when he opened fire, Singh told reporters. He added that Carrington's friend, who also fled the scene, was "lucky to be alive."

Several bystanders, including an off-duty trauma nurse, attempted to administer emergency medical care and CPR to Carrington. He was later rushed to hospital where he died some time later.

A man was seen fleeing the area in a newer model black Hyundai sedan with tinted windows. The suspect in the vehicle is described by police as a black male who is about five-foot-eight to six-feet tall and has a dark complexion and a medium build.

"I believe this shooting was targeted," said Det. Singh on Monday. "They were looking for Mr. Carrington."

In January 2015, Carrington and another man were arrested on murder charges after police alleged they shot three people in a Chinatown restaurant in November 2014. One of the victims in that shooting -- 31-year-old Mississauga man named Tariq Mohammed -- died.

Carrington was later released after police said the initial information they received was unreliable. Another man was charged in connection to the shooting.

Singh said Monday that there was no immediate indication that Carrington was killed as revenge for the Chinatown shooting.

A memorial had been built at the scene Monday. It included candles, flowers and pictures of Carrington with his son.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
