Toronto police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with a robbery and a fatal hit-and-run in the city's east end early Sunday morning.

Police say the suspect robbed a taxi driver outside an apartment building on Kennedy Road south of Merrian Road.

The suspect then fled the scene, driving northbound on Kennedy Road in a pickup truck. Police say the truck hit a male pedestrian near the intersection of Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue East shortly before 1 a.m.

"The pickup truck did fail to remain at the scene, however, the driver and the vehicle have been located and the driver is currently in police custody and facing numerous charges," Cst. Clint Stibbe told reporters on Sunday.

The family of the victim has identified the pedestrian as 22-year-old Rafsan Alam.

Alam, who had moved to Canada from Bangladesh at the age of four, was a University of Toronto business student. He lived just a few blocks from the scene of the hit-and-run with his younger brother and parents.

"We lost our son, the jewel of the family. That’s all we could say. One of the best kids in the entire family," Mohamad Alan, the victim’s uncle, told CTV Toronto.

"He had the whole potential – whole potential ahead of him and that just ends. He doesn’t deserve this," said Ashraf Alam, another uncle of the victim.

Alam’s family says he was in downtown Toronto Saturday night, where he was hanging out with his friends. They say he had just returned and was crossing the street to purchase some cinnamon buns at a Country Style coffee shop when he was hit.

Alam's mother said he had told her earlier on Saturday that he was going to buy some pastries for his sister who was expected to return to Canada this weekend.

Toronto police have seized a pickup truck in connection to the hit-and-run. The truck -- which is missing a mirror on the passenger side and has what appears to be impact damage to the windshield and body -- was located in Vaughan Sunday morning.

Police have not released the name of the suspect.

He is facing a number of charges including: robbery while armed with a firearm, dangerous operation causing death, impaired driving causing death and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
