TORONTO - The agency that co-ordinates Ontario's electricity supply says it knows exactly when football fans began preparing their Super Bowl snacks.

The Independent Electricity System Operator says electricity demand jumped by about 700 megawatts -- enough to power a city the size of London, Ont. -- at 5:40 p.m. EST.

Agency spokeswoman Alexandra Campbell says that's about 450 megawatts higher than the normal demand for that time on a Sunday.

Campbell says the heavy power demand continued for about 20 minutes and then dropped back to a level below normal over the next 10 minutes.

The agency attributes the rise in demand to people preparing food and turning on their televisions for the game.

It interprets the lower-than-usual demand after kickoff to mean fans stayed in front of the TV.
