Communities along the western rim of Lake Ontario may be hit with snow squalls Wednesday.

A special weather statement was issued for Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton and Niagara Region.

Environment Canada said cold air off the open waters of Lake Ontario may generate lake-effect flurries and local snow squalls. If that happens, the snow would begin in Niagara Region in the afternoon and Hamilton early in the evening.

Burlington and Oakville may be affected when the winds become "more easterly" near midnight, Environment Canada said in the special weather statement.

Significant snowfall amounts are not expected, but visibility will be poor if snow squalls develop.
