Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Toronto this weekend, while parts of Southern Ontario prepare for up to 50 centimetres of rain before Saturday night.

The rain that began Friday afternoon is expected to continue in Toronto for most of the weekend. The city is expected to get up to 25 millimetres of rain by Saturday night.

Flood warnings have been issued for several parts of the region.

With roads sure to be sopping, motorists are being advised to drive carefully, particularly if heading northbound where water could turn the roads to black ice. High winds forecast for the weekend could further hamper driving conditions.

Areas further north will see snow for much of the weekend, and many are under a winter storm warning calling for 15 to 20 centimetres of snow.

The weather system has been working its way eastward since Thursday night, when Ontario Provincial Police in western Ontario responded to 90 collisions linked to freezing rain. Police say most were caused by drivers moving too quickly for the icy conditions and following other vehicles too closely.
