A man has been arrested following a fatal collision on the Queen Elizabeth Way in Stoney Creek on Tuesday morning.

Witnesses told Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt that a man was seen driving the wrong way on the QEW shortly before two vehicles collided.

Schmidt said the driver was intending to head toward Toronto on the Niagara-bound lanes of the QEW when the collision happened at 5:30 a.m., near Fifty Road.

One person died and another is in serious condition.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested and will face charges of impaired driving causing death, police said.

The section of the Niagara-bound QEW was closed for several hours for investigation.
