A protest at Toronto's Pearson International Airport could cause delays and travel disruptions for those returning from March Break on Friday.

Members of Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, held an information picket Friday morning, and are planning a second protest between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The pickets are being held at Terminal One and Terminal Three.

The union represents more than 250 Servisair employees in charge of providing service to travellers needing special assistance.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority operating system states that contracts must be retendered every three years to different employers. This month, the GTAA awarded its contract to a new provider, Toronto Ground Airport Services.

Often employees go on to work for the new employer, but the union said workers are forced to start at the bottom again every three years.

"They have to be re-interviewed for a job they have done for years, hoping to be re-hired," Unifor President Cheryl Robinson said in a statement Friday.

"They lose their seniority, go back to minimum wage and often lose their hard-won benefits."

TGAS has made no commitment to hire those previously working for Servisair.
