Police shut down several roads in Oshawa Monday after discovering what authorities believe was a homemade explosive device.

Durham Regional Police officers were called to a footpath that runs from Greenwood Avenue to Marquette Avenue at around 9:30 a.m. after receiving a call about a suspicious object.

When officers arrived on scene, they located a device made of aerosol cans with a wick attached to the end.

Though investigators said the wick had likely already been ignited prior to their arrival, officers with the Durham Regional Police Explosive Disposal Unit detonated the device as a precaution.

Roads surrounding the area were shut down while police determined the safety of the area.

Surveillance camera footage obtained after the incident revealed that two boys, believed to be between 10 and 12 years old, lit the wick of the device at around 2 a.m. and ran across Greenwood Avenue to Park Road South.

The video showed the flame extinguish moments later.

There was no damage or reported injuries as a result.

Anyone with new information about this incident is being asked to call Det. Const. Gomez of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 2704 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
