Those hoping to get their hands on a permit to use the new high-occupancy toll lanes along a stretch of the Queen Elizabeth Way this fall can now apply online.

The HOT lanes, which replace existing high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, will be in place from Trafalgar Road in Oakville to Guelph Line in Burlington starting September 15.

Starting today, ServiceOntario will be accepting online applications for the permits.

The permits will be available through a draw every three months and those selected in the lottery will be able to purchase one for $180 or $60 for a one-month pass.

Permit holders will be allowed to renew their passes for a maximum of two additional three-month periods.

Vehicles with two or more occupants will still be allowed to use the lanes free of charge.

The provincial government says the new HOT lanes are part of a pilot project that aims to improve traffic flow, maximize highway capacity, and help to manage congestion.

For the first draw, only 500 permits will be available but that number will increase in future lotteries.

Applications for the first draw will be accepted online until Aug. 21.

“HOT lanes have the ability to help the whole highway system move faster by relieving pressure from regular lanes and by providing an option for motorists who are willing to pay a small fee,” Transportation Minister Stephen Del Duca said when the pilot project was announced in June. “We are providing drivers with one more choice to consider that will help their commutes move more smoothly.”

The QEW pilot project is expected to run over the next four years.
