In an operation they are calling "Project Disconnect" Burlington police officers disguised as panhandlers are ticketing distracted drivers.

The blitz is part of a twice-per-year crackdown on distracted driving in the city and is now in its second year.

But, this is the first time the police have used officers dressed in hoodies and jeans who hold cardboard signs and stand at intersections.

"It's much easier to see the people with their cell phones in their laps while they're texting at the lights," said Halton Regional Police Sgt. Chantal Corner

The campaign has been so successful that police ticketed 121 drivers on their cellphones in just six hours.

"It's a very, very successful campaign," said Corner. "There are many people out there who are not abiding by new laws and they are not putting their cellphones down."

The four-day campaign wraps up on Thursday.
