Three men have been arrested following a slew of separate home invasions across Ontario, including one which saw an Oshawa resident fight off his attackers.

Two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries after the occupants of an Oshawa home fended off two home invaders early Wednesday morning.

Durham Regional Police said officers were called to a residence on Sunset Drive and found two men suffering from head injuries.

James McDonald said that he was playing video games with his 17-year-old brother when two masked men burst into the home armed with a mallet and a knife.

McDonald said that the intruders demanded money from a basement cash box.

"The man with the hammer was inside here and hit me across the face right in the temple here with the rubber mallet," McDonald told CTV Toronto.

The two residents and two invaders began to fight.

McDonald said that one of the intruders dropped his knife as he picked up money that had scattered on the floor when he accidently dropped the cash box.

"I kicked him as hard as I can," McDonald said.

One victim and one suspect were taken to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Durham Regional Police said that the incident was unusual.

"That was an unsuspecting turn of events. The suspect ended up being injured and overtaken, we don't see that happen often," Sgt. Nancy Van Rooy said. "Usually they are the ones being armed and have the upper hand, so to speak."

Matthew McMillan, 23, of no fixed address, is charged with: possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose, robbery, breaking and entering and disguise with intent.

Durham police are also searching for a second suspect who left the scene before officers arrived. He is described as a male, white, about 6-feet tall with a skinny build with facial tattoos. He was last seen wearing black clothing.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact Det. Mark Morissette at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 3617. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Home invasion in Pickering

Durham Regional Police are also searching for three male suspects, one armed with a handgun, in connection to a violent home invasion at a Pickering apartment complex on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old victim was home alone in his family's apartment at about 12 p.m. when he answered a knock at the door, police said.

Three men rushed into the apartment, physically restrained and pistol-whipped the victim.

Police said that the suspects then ransacked the apartment and fled with cash.

The victim was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

One suspect is described as a light-skinned black man, about 5-feet and 5-inches tall, wearing a purple coat and togque. He had a silver handgun.

The other suspects were described as black men, both about 6-feet tall, thin and wearing puffy black jackets and balaclavas.
