BARRIE, Ont. - Ontario's premier says the province will not try to regulate rising gas prices.

As motorists fume, Dalton McGuinty says regulation tends to backfire.

He cites the east coast, where, he says, prices are higher despite government regulation.

While the regulation of gas does create more stability, McGuinty says drivers still end up paying more.

Gas prices in Ontario have climbed to around the $1.20 a litre mark.

Oil companies blame instability in countries like Libya for the rise.
