MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Ontario's police watchdog is probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 22-year-old man in Oakville.

The Special Investigations Unit says police were called to a residence (on Oak Springs Road) in the town west of Toronto at about 10:45 p.m. Sunday and found a man sitting in a vehicle nearby.

The SIU says the man got out of the vehicle and there was an interaction with the officers, who discharged their firearms.

The man was struck by a gunshot and was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

The SIU has assigned seven investigators and four forensic investigators to the incident and anyone with information regarding the case is asked to contact the agency.

The Special Investigations Unit is an arm's-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
