Two teenage girls slated to graduate from a North York high school today were struck by a vehicle in front of their school.

The two 18-year-old girls were struck by a southbound Volkswagen while they crossed Bayview Avenue near McKee Avenue.

One victim was said to be in life-threatening condition. Both girls reportedly suffered head injuries.

An international high school located in the area Royal Crown Academic School confirmed to CTV News Toronto on Wednesday that the two girls were students expecting to graduate in a ceremony today. The ceremony is being held at the Grande Luxe Event Boutique, just a block north of where the school is located.

“We are devastated to learn of the accident of our students,” the school said in a written statement provided to CTV News Toronto. “Our thoughts are with them and their family, hoping for their speedy recovery. We look forward to giving them a special graduation session as soon as possible.”

Police looking for witnesses

The driver of the vehicle involved in the incident remained at the scene following the collision but police are working to confirm if a second vehicle may have also been involved.

Police are trying to figure out what led to the collision. They have not determined if the driver of the Volkswagen was speeding at the time. Const. Clint Stibbe said there was no controlled intersection or crosswalk where the girls were attempting to cross.

“We do have reconstruction teams en route as well as a photo team coming up to record all forensic evidence and verify that the debris that is on the roadway is in fact from one vehicle and not from two,” Const. Clint Stibbe said. “Currently we are seeking any witnesses to the collision,” he said. “We are asking that if anybody did have any dash cam video of the area in and around that time to contact us as soon as possible.”

Roads in the area of the collision were closed as police investigated the scene, but they have since reopened.
