A careful excavation under a barn in Cannington, Ont. has failed to unearth any human remains.

Acting on unconfirmed media reports last week, Durham Regional Police began digging through the concrete floor of a barn in Cannington where it was believed the bodies of three boys may have been buried.

The investigation had not been deemed a homicide, but police told CTV Toronto on Thursday that they were searching the farm after a report that the boys may have been murdered there in the 1950s.

After searching the area for several days, police issued a statement Sunday.

"The only item located was a boulder. No human remains were found."

The case is not considered an active investigation, but police said the file will remain open in case any new information is received.
