The Toronto Transit Commission says they do not have an issue with overcrowding on a downtown bus route, after nine people were taken to hospital following a near-collision Thursday morning.

A packed TTC bus southbound along Bay Street made an abrupt stop to avoid a collision just north of Wellesley Street, shaking the approximately 60 people on board.

Toronto police said a number of people on board the bus suffered bumps and bruises. Nine people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The TTC operator has been charged with careless driving, police said on Thursday.

Arlene Davis was on the bus at the time of the incident and said she could feel the bus suddenly brake, before people standing on the bus went flying forward.

She said she rides the route southbound every morning and the bus is always packed, adding that she and her fellow riders are always concerned the bus is overcrowded.

TTC spokesman Danny Nicholson said the bus load met TTC standards, adding that that particular downtown bus route would be among the busiest during the morning rush hour.
