A regional councillor from St. Catharines has been asked to step down after an email containing a pornographic image circulated Monday afternoon.

The email was sent from Counc. Andrew Petrowski’s account.

Niagara Region media relations confirmed reports that an email was sent out that showed a photo of a naked woman with her legs open while sitting on a chair.

Regional Chair Alan Caslin called the conduct “reprehensible.”

“The content of the email from Councillor Petrowski earlier today is reprehensible and the conduct is completely unacceptable for a Regional Councillor,” Caslin wrote in a statement sent out to media on Monday

“I demand better when conducting business on behalf of the Region.”

Caslin went on to apologize to the recipients of the email on behalf of the Niagara Region.

“Please know that an individual councillor’s comments do not represent the values of our organization. I have insisted that the Councillor meet with me tomorrow to discuss limits on his use of Regional devices and email accounts,” wrote Caslin.

“Further, I have spoken directly to the Councillor about this egregious conduct, and have requested that he resign from Regional Council.”

In November 2016, Petrowski was in the headlines after the president of a Niagara Region B’Nai Israel congregation asked for him to be censured for posting an anti-Semitic video on Twitter. In August 2016, there was another incident where Caslin called for Petrowski to apologize for a Twitter post the community said was homophobic.
