A new condominium building on Toronto's waterfront will have luxury units and subsidized suites, accessible via completely separate entrances.
The Aqualina at Bayside building, coming to 200 Queens Quay East in 2016, will have a section of affordable lofts intended for artists, managed by Artscape, a non-profit urban development organization that provides space for artists to live and work.
Residents of the 80 subsidized units at Aqualina at Bayside will not only have a separate door, they’ll have separate amenities too. The affordable residences are expected to open in 2018 or 2019.
Residents of 225 condos to be sold at market prices will have access to a gym and pool, party room and rooftop deck starting in Fall 2016.
The city's director of affordable housing told media that the separation of amenities and living space is what keeps the costs down, explaining that the affordable section will not include all the luxuries of an upscale building.
Aqualina Bayside, owned by developer Tridel, is not Toronto's only two-entrance building. Another Artscape project called Triangle Lofts has two entrances and rents studio apartments.
According to the website, Artscape charges approximately $350 per month to live in a 600-square-foot studio apartment. Prices vary depending on the size of the studio space.
The company also offers short-term residencies at its property Gibraltar Point, located on Toronto Island.
