MIYAZAKI, Japan -- Canada's women's baseball team clinched a spot in the second round of the World Cup with a 9-8 extra-inning comeback victory over Taiwan on Tuesday.
The Canadians were down by five runs going into the sixth inning, before battling back to win.
"It's something that everyone needs to know about Canada," manager Andre Lachance said. "We're never going to let anything go, we never quit and we always battle right to the end. Whoever plays us will have to battle to beat us every single time."
Stephanie Savoie of La Pocatiere, Que., led off the sixth with a single before driving in two runs in the same inning to put Canada up 7-6. She drove in the winning run with her third hit of the game, finishing with three RBIs.
"That felt great," Savoie said. "It's amazing. I love to play when the game is a challenge, and I think I'm better where there is some pressure. If I have no pressure, I'm good, but I'm better when I have that pressure on my shoulders."
Autumn Mills of London, Ont., got the start for Canada and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Canada will face the United States on Wednesday to wrap up the first round. Both teams have two victories and have already clinched their spots in the second round.
