A 33-year-old man who was shot in Ajax late Monday night has been pronounced dead, police confirm.

The shooting happened near Ducatel Cres. and Ventura Lane at around 10: 30 p.m.

Officers were called to the area for reports of multiple gunshots and when they arrived, they found a man sitting inside a vehicle parked near a townhouse complex south of Ducatel Cres.

Police said the victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and the vehicle had sustained several bullet holes.

Officers on scene performed CPR before paramedics arrived and took over.

The man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he has since succumbed to his injuries.

The victim has been identified by Durham Regional Police as Vernie Ferrigon, 33, of Mississauga.

According to a police source, Ferrigon has been convicted of weapons charges, participation in a criminal organization and assaulting a corrections officer. A few years ago, Ferrigon was stopped by police for speeding and arrested for breaching his bail conditions. Ontario Provincial Police officers allegedly found a large amount of cash and cocaine in his vehicle at the time of his arrest.

Though police say they do not have any suspect information to release at this time, witnesses reported seeing a large black SUV vehicle drive away from the area following the shooting.

The vehicle was last seen travelling eastbound on Ducatel Cres.

"It's too bad, it's too bad. It's a very quiet neighbourhood and when we hear shooting, that's a very scary thing," a resident in the area told CTV Toronto.

Police are urging any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Det. Jennings (ext. 5223) or Det. Moore (ext. 5326) with the Durham Regional Police Service Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520.
