A 29-year-old man was charged after he allegedly tried to attack a prisoner in an Oshawa courtroom on Tuesday afternoon and injured a constable in the process.

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. at the Durham Regional Courthouse, located on Bond Street East.

Special Durham police constables were providing security during a sentencing hearing. The prisoner, who was being sentenced, was sitting in an area surrounded by protective glass.

A male suspect seated in the public gallery leapt over the partition, police said, and walked toward the prisoner. The suspect damaged the glass trying to get to the prisoner – but was tackled by constables and officers in the courtroom.

One of the constables was assaulted in the process of restraining the suspect and sustained minor injuries.

Markham resident Garrett Naylor was arrested and charged with assault and mischief under $5,000. He was later released on an undertaking with conditions.
