A 21-year-old man who was gunned down near a parkette in Scarborough late Thursday night was targeted in an “ambush style attack,” police say.

Kevaughn Morgan was fatally shot on a sidewalk along Rushley Drive near Lawrence Avenue and Brimley Road at around 10:15 p.m.

A resident, identified as Alex Konodlyany, said he found the victim on the sidewalk after hearing two loud bangs.

Konodlyany said he initially didn’t recognize the noise as gunshots but decided to check it out anyway, at which point he found the victim and called 911.

“He seemed like he was passing out. He wasn’t breathing and his eyes just started to close. He just seemed gone,” he said.

The 21-year-old victim was rushed to SunnyBrook Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

Though shell casings were not found at the scene, investigators believe the victim was shot between two and five times.

“It’s safe to say multiple shots were fired. How many times he was hit – we don’t know yet,” Det. Paul Worden told reporters at a news conference Friday. “If the weapon was a revolver, (finding no shell casings) would be normal.”

Worden said that several witnesses reported seeing one of possibly two suspects running southbound on Lawrence Avenue toward Marcos Boulevard immediately following the shooting.

Police describe the suspect as a black male who is between 20 and 25 years old, approximately six-foot with a thin to medium build and short hair. He was last seen wearing grey or light coloured, long track pants that were falling off him as he was running and a grey and white striped shirt with white running shoes.

“We’re asking residents in the area, specifically residents of Marcos Bouleward, if they have surveillance equipment on their property to check it between the hours of 9:45 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. to see if they captured a suspect or any suspicious parties in the area,” Worden said.

Some witnesses reported seeing two suspects, but investigators say they do not have a good description of a second person. According to Worden, only one shooter was involved in the incident.

“This shooting was an ambush style attack. The suspect began shooting without any warning or prior communication. It is for this reason we feel the suspect may have been following the deceased or may have been surveilling the deceased beforehand.”

Worden said that the victim lived nearby the area and was going to visit someone when the shooting took place.

He added that the victim was known to police and likely targeted.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

“We’re not ruling anything out at this point but the investigation has led us to believe that more than likely Mr. Morgan was the target,” Worden said.

“We believe Mr. Morgan’s friends know the reason for the shooting. I strongly encourage them to come forward with any information they have so Morgan and his family can have the justice they deserve.”

Anyone with information is asked to call investigators.
