A male victim has died and three others were transported to hospital after a carbon monoxide leak was reported at a Scarborough high-rise.

The incident happened at a building on Torrance Road, near Eglinton Avenue and McCowan Road, around 2 p.m.

Toronto EMS says the male victim, who has not been identified, was found without vital signs at the scene. He was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The three other victims are being treated for minor injuries.

Toronto Fire says several gas-pressure washers were being used underground at the time of the incident and may have been responsible for the carbon monoxide leak.

"They had workers in the underground garage and they were using some gas-powered equipment and it appears that the carbon monoxide levels have gone up to dangerous levels as a result," Toronto Fire Cpt. Stephen Power told CP24 on Wednesday.

Residents from the first six floors of the building were temporarily evacuated as officials investigated the incident. The building was declared safe at around 5:45 p.m.

The Ministry of Labour has launched an investigation into why the workers were unable to detect the rising levels of carbon monoxide.

Second carbon monoxide incident

Toronto EMS later responded to another carbon monoxide incident in the Sheppard Avenue and Markham Road area at around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Emergency officials say three male victims suffered minor injuries after a pressure washer was also being used. A male victim in his 20s was transported to hospital with symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Toronto EMS says he is conscious and alert.
