Toronto Hydro says it hopes to have power restored to the more than hundred customers still in the dark by Thursday night, two days after a wintery mix of snow and freezing rain hit the city.

The utility company says the following areas are still without power:

  • Humberline Drive
  • Eglinton Avenue East and Jonesville Crescent
  • 16 Brookers Lane

At the peak of the blackout on Tuesday, approximately 87,000 customers temporarily lost their power. Toronto Hydro says a downed Hydro One transmission line, dozens of hydro-pole fires and the weather was the cause of the blackout.

Crews have since been working to restore the power. On Thursday, approximately 144 customers were still in the dark.

A spokesperson for Toronto Hydro says, in some cases, crews have encountered complications, meaning some customers might have to spend another evening without power.

"It's one house at a time or one pole at a time as the case may be," said Brian Buchan. "They need to go in and figure out what the problem is and how they’re going to reconfigure the pole or what they can do temporarily; and sometimes (they) uncover other issues as well."

Frozen pipes

Across Toronto, some residents are also without water due to frozen water supply pipes caused by the recent cold snap.

"It's been a bit of a struggle, but luckily we have two pretty great neighbours so we’ve been able to rely on them for water and the occasional shower," Dave McCorkell told CTV Toronto on Thursday. McCorkell has been without water for the past 10 days. And he's not alone.

Since Feb. 14, the City of Toronto has received more than 3,100 no-water calls. More than 420 homes have been hooked with a highline, a temporary fix that allows residents to tap into their neighbour's water supply. And nearly 190 homes have been put on a thaw list because city crews were not able to install the highline.

Meanwhile, McCorkell is hopeful he will have running water Thursday night. Crews during the day were thawing the city-owned pipes outside of his home.

"They seem pretty confident they’ll be able to get it on by tonight so I’ll be able to shower,” he said. “I’ll be pretty happy."
