A human skull and bones discovered near a west-end park belonged to 28-year-old Rigat Ghirmay, who was murdered in 2013, police confirmed Thursday.

Toronto police were called to Lavender Creek Trail, near Weston Road and St. Clair Avenue West, on Wednesday at about 2 p.m. after a human skull and bones were discovered by a man walking in the park.

The coroner was called to the scene and confirmed the remains were in fact human.

Police said Wednesday that the decomposition of the remains appeared to be advanced as there was no skin on the skull or bones.

A forensic examination determined the skull belongs to Ghirmay.

Back in May 2013, Ghirmay’s torso was found in a duffel bag off a trail near to the area.

Adonay Zekarias was charged with first-degree murder and committing an indignity to a body in Sept. 2013. He is currently serving a life-sentence for the fatal stabbing of Nighisti Semret in the Cabbagetown neighbourhood in Oct. 2012.

Police are expected to conduct an extensive search of the Lavender Trail area on Friday in hopes of finding more remains.
