Toronto police have identified the man who was shot dead at an illegal after-hours party over the weekend.

Police said 30-year-old Edwin Carpio of Ajax, Ont. suffered a fatal gunshot wound to his body Sunday morning.

Emergency responders were called to the scene of what they deemed “an illegal afterparty” in a residence at Keele Street and Wilson Avenue at about 7 a.m..

“When officers arrived they found a man [dead],” Det. Sheila Ogg told CTV Toronto.

Police believe as many as 10 individuals were present at the time shooting. However, none were still around by the time emergency personnel arrived to the scene, which police earlier described as a booze can, which was located in a residence above a Western Union.

The building was corned off as police investigated Sunday. By the evening tenants were allowed to return to the building to collect their belongings.

Officers canvassed the area for information and investigators received some assistance from employees at a nearby gas station.

“Now this happened here. It’s really scary. Especially for all the people that work here at night. It’s not safe anymore,” said Amrit Singh, a Pioneer Gas station employee.

Gregorio Hernandez was with the victim Saturday night. “I left. I don’t know what happened after,” said Hernandez.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue.
