Public health officials say a Markham resident has tested positive for West Nile virus – the first confirmed human case in York Region this year.

According to a news release issued Friday by York Region, a laboratory test confirmed that the individual was infected.

Public health officials encourage residents to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, socks and a hat when outdoors and to use mosquito repellant when applicable. They also suggest removing standing, stagnant water sources such as bird baths, outdoor toys and flower pots.

“Education and awareness are key to avoiding West Nile virus infection,” Dr. Karim Kurji, York Region’s Medical Officer of Health, said in the release. “Remember to cover up or stay inside during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.”

Symptoms of the virus include fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion and headache.

In some rare cases, West Nile can lead to a life-threatening inflammation of tissue surrounding the brain called encephalitis.

Earlier this month, officials in York Region confirmed that two mosquito traps tested positive for West Nile in Markham.
