A low pressure system rolling into southern Ontario may hamper travel plans on Christmas Eve.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning in a special weather statement for the City of Toronto on Wednesday evening.

“Motorists travelling for the Christmas Holidays should be prepared for difficult driving conditions especially on highways exposed to strong and gusty cross winds,” the weather agency said. “High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.”

The warning suggests there will be winds of 60 km/h, gusting to 90 km/h. Wind gusts of 100 km/h are, “quite likely in exposed areas.”

"Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break," Environment Canada said.

The forecast for Christmas Eve also includes a risk of a thunderstorm, fog patches and a low of 3 C.

Porter Airlines issued a travel advisory earlier in the day, but most flights from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport were departing on time Wednesday evening, according to the Toronto Port Authority.

At Pearson Airport, a handful of flights had been cancelled and delayed as of 6 p.m., according to the airport’s website.

Things should improve somewhat on Christmas Day. The forecast for Toronto includes winds of 40 km/h gusting to 60 km/h, a 40 per cent chance of showers, and a high of 4 C.
