All eight citizen directors of Toronto's Sony Centre for the Performing Arts have tendered their resignations.

The move comes ahead of a vote in next week's city council to remove the same eight board members. The vote would have seen the board members replaced with a mix of city employees and councillors.

That vote was spurred by an earlier report from the city's Auditor General, Jeffrey Griffiths, which found significant issues with budgetary overruns and delays in relation to the renovation of the Sony Centre, ongoing since 2008.

The report also noted the cost of the renovation had risen from an initial $28 million to $40 million.

The resignation letter, written by board chair Ron Forbes on behalf of all eight resigning members, states that the current board members were appointed after the Auditor General's report, and noted the "politicized oversight" has made it "impossible for volunteer citizens to effectively serve as Board members."

Sony Centre CEO Dan Brambilla was not available for comment.
