WINDSOR, Ont. - Animal welfare officials in Windsor are trying to track down the person who abandoned a box of puppies in the city's east end.

The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society says the box containing eight mixed-breed puppies was found near a dumpster over the long weekend.

The puppies are about three to four weeks old and are in good health but officials say they are too young to be away from their mother.

The society's executive director Melanie Coulter says there are no immediate plans for any charges, but officials would like to speak with the person who left the box there.

Coulter says they just want to know what happened and why the puppies were removed from their mother at such a young age.

She says it doesn't look like the pups had been abandoned for too long before they were found.
