The Don Valley Parkway has shut down in both directions for fall maintenance, and is expected to reopen early Monday morning before rush hour.

The highway closed Friday at 10 p.m. from the 401 to the Gardiner Expressway.

During the closure, road crews will perform a number of maintenance activities on the busy north-south artery to ensure it is in a state of good repair as the cold winter months approach.

"A full closure of the roadway is needed to ensure safety for the public and for those working at the site," a statement from the city said.

The highway is scheduled to reopen Monday at 5 a.m.

Some of the maintenance activities that will be undertaken before that time include:

  • The inspection and repair of overhead signs
  • Roadside cleanup and expressway sweeping
  • The inspection of closed-circuit television cameras

The city is advising motorists to use alternate routes, such as Don Mills Road, Bayview Avenue, Victoria Park and Kingston Road, during the closure.
