Drivers living in Toronto and the 905 are paying the highest auto insurance premiums in the province, a new list shows.
The list, compiled by online auto insurance marketplace tool Kanetix.ca, lists the 10 most expensive cities for auto insurance in Toronto.
According to the list, Toronto ties with Markham at fourth most expensive city in Ontario when it comes to the highest estimated premiums.
According to Kanetix, Toronto and Markham drivers can expect to pay $1 886 a year for auto insurance, some 30 per cent higher than the provincial average of $1,448.
But that might seem like a bargain if you live in Brampton, which tops the list as the most costly Ontario city for auto insurance, with an estimated premium of $2,392, or 65 per cent higher than the provincial average.
Vaughan and Mississauga are ranked second and third most expensive, respectively.
Richmond Hill, Hamilton, Pickering, Ajax, Bradford and Stoufville round out the rest of the list (with Bradford and Stoufville tied for tenth place).
The estimates are based on a single, 35-year-old driver with a clean driving record.
“While there are a lot of variables that go into determining what you pay to insure your vehicle, one of the most influential factors is where you live,” Janine White, vice-president of Kanetix.ca said in a news release. “If you reside anywhere in the GTA, chances are you'll be paying a lot more.”
While the GTA is typically the most expensive place in the province for auto insurance, there are a few exceptions. Drivers in Whitby ($1,443) and Oshawa ($1,354) pay less than average.
Drivers in other parts of the province get away with even less. Those cities include St. Catharines ($1,317), Kitchener ($1,251), Cambridge ($1,172), Waterloo ($1,165), Ottawa ($1,142) and Guelph ($1,128).
Hawkesbury, Ont. drivers have the most to smile about when it comes to auto insurance. At $956 per year, the town on the Quebec-Ontario border has the lowest typical premiums in the province.
