A Toronto woman has been charged after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in a hit-and-run in the city’s east end, police say.

The incident happened at Danforth and Gillard Avenues shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said a 63-year-old pedestrian was struck by a brown or grey Toyota Corolla, and received serious injuries. The man was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead.

Officers said the driver fled the scene before emergency crews arrived, and told CTV Toronto that there was "no way" the driver wouldn't have noticed she'd hit someone.

On Thursday morning, police said 27-year-old Meron Guizzardi was taken into custody and charged with dangerous driving causing death. She has also been charged with failure to stop at an accident causing death and criminal negligence causing death.

The investigation is ongoing, and police ask that any businesses in the area with video surveillance to contact them. Anyone with more information is asked to call police at 418-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
