A 56-year-old general contractor has died following an industrial accident in Mississauga.

Peel police said the male contractor, who was doing excavation work on a residential property on Camilla Road, became trapped after he somehow became pinned down by an excavator.

Rescue crews tried to remove mud and stones from the surrounding area, so that heavy machinery could be brought in to help free him, reports CTV Toronto’s Austin Delaney.

During the rescue efforts, Peel police said they had notified the worker’s family.

“His family has been notified and we are now in a recovery situation as opposed to a rescue,” said Const. Fiona Thiverge.

A tow truck was eventually brought in and was used to lift the large digger off the worker.

The entire recovery effort took around five hours.

One resident described her shock at the incident.

“To wake up in the morning and not know what’s going to happen when you go to work? That’s horrible,” she said. “I feel horrible for the family. I couldn’t imagine ever having to deal with that.”

Police and the Ministry of Labour are investigating the incident.
