Two civilian members of the Durham Regional Police Service assisted in an arrest after a restaurant employee was assaulted in Oshawa last week.

The incident occurred on Aug. 26 just before 8 a.m. inside a restaurant on Bond Street.

According to police, two civilians were having a coffee break when a male employee called out for them to contact police. The employee said a man was trashing an upper level apartment.

The police were contacted, but the suspect came down from the apartment and started to assault the employee, police said.

The two civilians intervened and held the suspect until police arrived.

The employee suffered minor injuries from the assault, police said.

The two civilians were not injured and will be given a commendation for their efforts, police said in a news release.

Oshawa resident Dylan Taylor, 21, was arrested and charged with assault and two counts of failing to comply with probation.

He was held for a bail hearing.

Police are asking anyone with new information about the incident to contact Durham Regional Police Service’s Central East Division.
