The City of Toronto has budgeted more money for road repairs this year and officials want to complete 90 per cent of construction projects before winter.

The city announced a $230-million list of large road repair targets on Tuesday, which includes a $10-million increase in spending from last year.

Transportation and works officials said residents can expect to see a lot more work done in 2007 because the city only managed to spend about 60 per cent of its allotted budget last year.

Unforeseen delays and planning and contract issues often mean road repair money goes unspent.

Gary Welsh, the general manager of transportation, says he is confident more work will be complete this year.

The city is also vowing to tackle the estimated 50,000 potholes on Toronto's streets. A hotline has been set up for residents to report the pits, and the city promises to have them repaired quickly.

"You find them, we'll fix them," said works chairman Glenn De Baeremaeker.

"You call the City of Toronto at 416-338-0338 and you have my guarantee that we'll have that pothole fixed within two-to-four working days from when you call us."

There are 10 major roadwork projects planned on streets including: Dundas Street, McCowan Road, Kingston Road and Davenport Road.

The first big road closure of the season takes place this weekend when the Gardiner Expressway will be shut down at 2 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday between Carlaw Avenue and the Humber Bridge for annual spring maintenance.
