Walkways and lanes under the Gardiner Expressway could be closed if inspectors find the areas unsafe, the City of Toronto said Thursday.

The city also said it would send additional crews to conduct visual inspections and hire additional external engineers to accelerate the process.

The stepped up vigilance comes amid reports of more sections of the aging elevated highway crashing to the ground.

All pedestrian areas under the Gardiner are expected to be inspected by Friday and protected, while roadway sections will see a visual engineering inspection by June 15.

City crews began clearing loose concrete from beneath the Gardiner Expressway on Wednesday, one day after another chunk of debris fell from the downtown highway.

Tuesday's incident was the third time this month that a piece of the Gardiner's concrete facade crumbled and fell to the ground.

Earlier in May, concrete chunks fell from parts of the highway near Lower Jarvis Street and Parkside Drive.
