Cooling centres will be open across the city today and some swimming pools will have extended hours as the sweltering heat continues.
On Saturday morning, Toronto’s Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe upgraded an existing heat warning to an extended heat warning, triggering the opening of cooling centres.
The warning also means that some public swimming pools will be able to extend their hours until 11:45 p.m.
Environment Canada is forecasting that the temperature will hit 33 C today. The heat isn’t likely to vanish anytime soon, either. Highs of 30 C are forecast for Sunday and Monday and a high of 29 C is forecast for Tuesday.
The cooling centres open at 11 a.m. and close at 7 p.m., with the exception of Metro Hall which is open 24 hours a day while the warning is in effect.
Cooling centres are located at the following locations:
- Metro Hall – 55 John St. (This cooling centre remains open 24 hours a day for the duration of the extreme heat warning)
- East York Civic Centre – 850 Coxwell Ave.
- North York Civic Centre – 5100 Yonge St.
- Driftwood Community Centre – 4401 Jane St.
- Etobicoke Civic Centre – 399 The West Mall
- McGregor Community Centre – 2231 Lawrence Ave. E.
- Centennial Park Community Centre – 1967 Ellesmere Rd.
