Police say a suspect has been arrested in connection with a Mimico homicide on Wednesday morning.

Detective Murray Barnes told reporters Friday afternoon that he had been in touch with a lawyer for a 21-year-old man. Police were looking for the man after they were given information from people in the community after the shooting took place.

Barnes said police are expecting to lay a charge of second degree murder.

“As recently as 15 minutes ago detectives from our team were in contact with his lawyer,” Barnes said. “His lawyer has told us that he is in his presence and he has assured us that after they have had discussions and he has given him instructions he will turn himself in at a police station.”

The man in question was friends with the murder victim “for a long time,” the detective said.

Daniel John Lypka, 28, was shot in a parking lot behind an apartment building on Vanevery Street near Royal York Road at around overnight Thursday.

Police had previously said they believed Lypka was shot by someone he had argued with.

“There was a confrontation, there was an argument, there was a commotion and as a result Mr. Lypka was shot,” Barnes confirmed Friday.

Lypka was an apprentice plumber who was between jobs at the time of his death. He was not married and did not have any children but was close with his family.

“They were a good family that lived locally. They are shocked that this could happen. They are a stand up family in the community,” Barnes said.

At approximately 4 p.m. Friday, 21-year-old Tre Williams Robert-Stevens was arrested.

He is expected to appear in court at Old City Hall on Saturday.

His vehicle, a red 2001 Honda Civic coupe, is sought by investigators and is still outstanding. Its license plate is BYHE 883. It has a sunroof and a rear spoiler.
