Two victims of a strange motor vehicle accident in Ajax on Friday have died of their injuries, and a 17-year-old youth is facing multiple charges in connection with their deaths.

The youth, who can't be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with:

  • criminal negligence causing death (two counts)
  • dangerous driving causing death (two counts)
  • failing to remain at the scene of an accident (two counts)

Durham Regional Police said the youth, who is from Pickering, was to appear in bail court in Oshawa on Saturday afternoon.

Staff Sgt. Paul Hamilton told ctvtoronto.ca that one victim died overnight and the second passed away at about 1:30 p.m.

This is not considered a homicide investigation, he said.

The deaths stem from a Friday incident in which a motor vehicle accident and stabbing occurred almost simultaneously in the Griffiths Drive and Leah Crescent at 12:45 p.m. -- although a broken tree is one of the remaining pieces of evidence about the chaos.

One teenaged resident said there were more than a dozen emergency vehicles in the neighbourhood on Friday.

The two victims were walking down the street when a car struck them.

One of those individuals was airlifted to hospital in Toronto. That person had life-threatening injuries, police said Friday. A second person from the accident scene had serious injuries, but those were considered non-life-threatening.

Police said in a news release the victims were 15 and 17 years old respectively. They are both Toronto residents. Their names won't be released until their families have been notified.

Police suspect the two may have been involved in an earlier brawl at the park where a stabbing took place. The person who was stabbed is expected to live.
