A 15-year-old Toronto lacrosse player injured in a game over the long weekend has died.

Students at Malvern Collegiate, where Jamieson Kuhlmann attended, were told Wednesday afternoon he was taken off life support.

It's not exactly clear what happened, but Kuhlmann was hit during an afternoon match on Monday afternoon.

He and his Toronto Beaches midget field lacrosse team were playing in Newmarket, trying to qualify for the provincial championships.

Lacrosse is a physical sport and similar to hockey as it allows body checking, however, the Toronto Beaches Lacrosse Club says in its 30-year history they have never faced an incident such as this.

"The incident is being reviewed by the Ontario Lacrosse Association," John Steel, vice-president of the Toronto Beaches Lacrosse Club, told CTV Toronto.

"It's too early to tell you what exactly happened."

The teen's parents are calling the incident a "tragic accident" and don't blame anybody. They are in the process of making funeral arrangements.

In Facebook postings, Kuhlmann's classmates and teammates describe the teen as funny, outgoing and a great athlete.

Grief counselling is being offered at Malvern Collegiate and to the lacrosse players.
