York police providing support to community amidst rise in jewelry store robberies
Efforts are underway to support residents of York Region amid a rise in smash-and-grab robberies targeting GTA jewelry stores in recent months.
In partnership with the region, York Regional Police are setting up what they're calling "Traumatic Incident Response Protocol,” which aims to provide support and resources to the community following violent incidents in the area.
Police say these teams will set up booths at two local shopping centres this week to provide people with "healing activities and crime prevention and personal safety tips." Safety materials and wallet cards will also be on hand.
Today, officers from York Regional Police will be at Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill, near Carrville Road and Yonge Street, from noon to 7 p.m. as well as at CF Markville in Markham, near McCowan Road and Highway 7, on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m.
Police are inviting community members to attend and share their concerns with them.
Earlier this month, York Regional Police told CP24 that while they could not provide specific statistics, there has been a rise in jewelry store robberies in the region year-over-year.
Toronto police also said that so far in 2024, there had been 43 jewelry store robberies reported to police, compared to just 21 last year.
