Police and other emergency personnel are at the scene of a head-on crash between a tractor-trailer and a passenger car that has left a woman dead.

The car ended up pinned underneath the tractor-trailer's front bumper. The driver was a woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports of her presumed age vary wildly.

Const. Hugh Smith of the Toronto Police Service's traffic unit told ctvtoronto.ca that the accident occurred at about 3:05 p.m. on Tuesday on Steeles Avenue between Martin Grove Road and Kipling Avenue.

Initial reports indicate the woman might have been choking before the accident, he said.

An air ambulance had been dispatched, but was then called off, he said.

Steeles Avenue is closed in both directions while police investigate the crash. It is expected to remain closed into the evening.

Child struck

In another incident, Smith said a boy has been struck by a car at Doris Avenue and Sheppard Avenue East. That location is just east of Yonge Street. The incident happened shortly before 4 p.m.

He said the boy has been taken to hospital, but not to a trauma centre. The boy, estimated to be 9 or 10 years old, was conscious and breathing.

There did not appear to be a parent at the scene, he said.

Smith said Toronto has been awash in little collisions all afternoon.
