The soon-to-be married mayor of Whitchurch-Stouffville and his fiancée say they have come up with a novel way to ensure nobody is left off their wedding’s guest list: just invite the whole town.
Mayor Justin Altmann and his bride-to-be Jenny Hillier said that when their guest list started to grow uncontrollably, they had to do something different.
“We originally started our list and as we started going over it we recognized it was missing a lot of friends and family and people in the community. We didn’t have a banquet hall large enough to fit everyone at the time,” Altmann said on CP24 on Friday of their 500-name guest list.
“We decided let’s just do a public outdoor wedding, invite the community and then everyone could be there with us.”
So on Saturday, 800 VIPs as well as any of the town’s approximately 37,000 residents will be welcome to come to the city’s downtown to watch the pair say ‘I do.’
“It’s exciting and overwhelming,” Hillier said. “One of the things I learned very quickly when you fall in love with Justin, a representative of the town, you really do fall in love with the entire community.”
Altmann said their cake will stand about ten feet tall and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds.
After their nuptials are complete, guests will accompany the pair to the town’s ribfest in nearby Stouffville Memorial Park.
“Everyone can go into the park and we’ll have our receiving line and cake,” Altmann said.
He said more than 2,000 people have RSVP’d for the wedding, and when they opened their mail on Friday morning “there was a lot more.”
