Wet snow and torrential rain expected in Toronto

A spring storm brought heavy rain and high winds to the Greater Toronto Area and parts of southern Ontario Tuesday evening.

When will the heavy rain arrive?

A special weather statement remains in effect for Toronto and surrounding areas, warning of 25 to 50 millimetres of rain Tuesday night into Wednesday.

“A Colorado low is expected to begin affecting the region tonight. Rain, which may be heavy at times, is expected to begin this evening and continue into Wednesday,” the advisory reads.

Environment Canada added that very strong easterly winds with gusts possibly exceeding 80 km/h are expected in some areas this evening.

Power outages could be possible due to the high winds, the advisory warned.

The winds will ease on Wednesday.

Wet snow in the forecast

According to Environment Canada, the rain may transition to wet snow late Wednesday evening as temperatures cool, but significant amounts are not expected.

Toronto could see a snowfall amount of two centimetres.

After reaching a daytime high of 7 C on Wednesday, the temperature will dip to 2 C in the evening.

What to expect for the rest of the week

On Thursday, Toronto will continue to see periods of rain or snow with a high of 3 C.

CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter said temperatures will begin to recover on Friday, while “brighter and warmer” weather is expected over the weekend.

Environment Canada is calling for a mix of sun and cloud in Toronto on Saturday, with a daytime high of 10 C. Toronto will see sunshine and a high of 12 C on Sunday.
