SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine - A U-S Coast Guard crew has rescued two Ontario sailors well off the coast of Maine after their boat got into trouble in rough weather.

The coast guard says a 35-foot sailboat became disabled about 60 kilometres east of Southwest Harbor, Maine, on Wednesday.

Sailors aboard Excaliber, out of Port Stanley on Lake Erie, called the Coast Guard on Wednesday to report they were dealing with rough weather, but were not in any distress.

They called again four hours later to report their boom had broken, the vessel was taking water over the stern and they could only sail in one direction.

The wind was blowing at 35 to 45 knots with three metre seas and good visibility.

A 47-foot lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Southwest Harbor was sent to tow the boat into port.
