CALEDONIA, Ont. -- Police have identified two people killed in a weekend fire at an apartment building in a community south of Hamilton.
The fire broke out at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday at the 30-unit apartment building in Caledonia, and officials say the blaze was contained to single apartment.
Police say the fire was quickly brought under control but the rest of the building sustained water and smoke damage.
Donna LaPierre, 56, and Gerald LaPierre, 70, who were residents of a third-floor apartment, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Three other residents were taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation while the rest of the building's residents were evacuated and have since been found temporary shelter locations.
A post-mortem examination was scheduled for Monday to determine the cause of death for the two victims.
The Ontario Fire Marshal is continuing to investigate the blaze, along with police and fire department investigators.
